You would like to stay at Kozankaku, a traditional and classic inn in Ginzan Onsen, but the rooms at Kozankaku are only Japanese-style tatami mat rooms, so you will have to sleep on a futon on the tatami mats.
Also, there is no elevator in Kozankaku, so you will have to go up and down the stairs, which some people may find difficult.
For those people, we recommend the Cranova in the new wing of Kozankaku, which has twin-bed Western-style rooms and an elevator.
If you want to explore and enjoy the hot spring resort town of Ginzan Onsen, but prefer a comfortable room with modern facilities, we recommend the new building, Kuranova.
However, when staying at the Cranova, you will not have Japanese dinner in your room, but Italian food at the restaurant on the first floor.
Check-in is not at Kozankaku, which has a classical entrance, but at Kuranova. After check-in, you can use the large bath or private bath at Kozankaku.
In addition, since Kozankaku and Kuranova are connected by a passageway, you can enjoy the classical atmosphere of Kozankaku, including the lobby and exhibition rooms.
Kuranova has a new exterior, but it is stylish and blends in with the atmosphere of Ginzan Onsen.
Kuranova, the new building of Furuyama-kaku, offers a pick-up service from Yamagata Shinkansen Oishida Station by reservation only, so it is recommended to use this service.
The parking lot for those who rent a car is at the same location as Furuyama-kaku, on the left side before the entrance to the hot spring resort area of Ginzan Onsen (Silver Spring).
There are attendants at the parking lot, and your luggage will be carried to the inn by motorcycle, so you can walk to the inn lightly.
The Cranova room is about 23 square meters in size and has two beds, a living space, a washroom, and a toilet.
The room capacity is for 2 persons.
The beds are lined in Hollywood type and the bed pads are comfortable.
The toilets are equipped with washlet toilets with lids that open and close automatically, and the bathrooms are clean and neat.
Amenities include yukata, haori, tabi socks, towels, bath towels, toothbrush set, and a basket for going to the bath.
The refrigerator contains only free mineral water.
There are no vending machines in the inn, so it is best to purchase beer or soft drinks in advance and bring them in.
The washstands are equipped with a hair dryer, oil cleanser, facial cleanser, lotion, milky lotion, comb, razor, cotton, and cotton swabs.
The view from the room is shown here.
On the other side of the river is Shibataya Ryokan, a small, little-known inn in Ginzan Onsen.
Dinner will be Italian cuisine using local ingredients at the restaurant on the first floor in Kuranova.
It is a stylish Italian restaurant, but since it is an onsen ryokan, you can eat dinner in yukata (Japanese bathrobe).
The chef is the inn's young master who trained in Italian cuisine in Tokyo.
The restaurant offers not only Italian wines but also Yamagata wines to enjoy with your meal.
The Italian menu at the time of our stay was as follows.
Entree
Cold tomato soup
Antipasto
Seasonal Vegetables and Cured Ham with Fondue Sauce
Corn Sformato
Ayu Fish Confit with Arugula Sauce
Pasta
Handmade tagliolini with snow crab and calamari
Carne
Obanazawa Beef Arrost with Red Wine Sauce
Dolce
Panna cotta scented with shiny princess with lemon sauce
Pistachio Financier
Espresso or coffee or tea or herbal tea
We had a sparkling wine from Yamagata, which was dry and delicious to go with the food.
For the main meat dish, we had Italian wine, which was recommended by the restaurant.
And finally, we finished with grappa.
The Obanazawa beef arrosto was hearty and delicious.
And we had an after-dinner drink of grappa.
The local beef dish was hearty and tasty, and we were full.
Breakfast was originally a Western breakfast at the restaurant in Cranova, but since there were only two groups at the time of our stay, we had a Japanese breakfast at the restaurant in Kozankaku.
I could have enjoyed the atmosphere of the Kozankaku at breakfast, but I wanted to try the breakfast at the Cranova.
The Cranova breakfast consisted of a hearty salad of lettuce, broccoli, tomatoes, ham and sausage, soup, grilled salmon in olive oil, three kinds of bread, yogurt, and juice.
The new Cranova does not have a bath, so guests use the bath in the adjacent Kozankaku.
Kozankaku can be accessed via a passageway leading from the side of the elevator in the Cranova.
On the first floor of Kozankaku, there are separate baths for men and women and one private bath.
Men's bathhouse
rivate baths are not reserved, but are available when available.
A tag at the entrance indicates that the bath is in use, and you lock the door to the changing room.
The tag at the entrance of the bath indicating whether the bath is in use or not is set to “in use” and the bath is locked.
Private bath on the first floor
There is also one private bath on the third floor.
One of the private baths was often empty, so we could enjoy the hot spring without hesitation.
I was able to fully enjoy the sulfur spring water that makes Ginzan Onsen so good in private.

We stayed in a western style room in the new wing right next to the main building. We appreciated the bed room and the elevator, which allowed us to overlook the beautiful street from our room with a view on the third floor.
The new wing was called Cranova and had an Italian restaurant on the first floor.
We had dinner and breakfast in this restaurant, and I was surprised at first because I had never been to a restaurant that was so particular about the plates and cutlery.
I felt very enriched by seeing the beautiful plates for each dish.
I was also enchanted by the quality of the ingredients in the dishes.
I was really satisfied with such wonderful hospitality.
We went to the main building to take a bath.
This was an old, traditional bath with modest facilities.
The hot spring was very hot and warm enough.
I was very satisfied with the beautiful night view, delicious food, and courteous service.
