Showakan rooms, meals, baths, and access to the Showa-kan, where you can enjoy the open-air bath in the sky and Showa retro in Ginzan Onsen

About Shouwakan

Showakan is a family-run, homey hot spring inn with 13 rooms.

In Ginzan Onsen, where you can feel the romance of the Taisho era (1912-1926), Showakan, as the name suggests, is a hot spring inn where you can feel the atmosphere of the Showa era.

The inn is a three-story building with an elevator, so you can get to your room without using the stairs.

Rooms are available not only in Japanese style but also in Western-style rooms with beds ideal for solo travelers.

There are separate large public baths for men and women, as well as a rooftop observation bath with a nice view from the window.

There are no private baths, but since the inn is not large, the baths are never crowded, so you can enjoy the hot springs at your leisure.

Since the inn is located in the center of Ginzan Onsen, you can enjoy the main view of Ginzan Onsen from the window if you stay in a river side room.

The room rates are reasonable, so we recommend this inn for those who want to stay at a homey ryokan.

About access

Showakan offers a shuttle service to and from JR Oishida Station by reservation only, so it is recommended to use this service.

If you are going by rental car, you can park for free at the parking lots on both sides in front of the Ginzan Onsen Hot Spring Resort.

When you arrive at the parking lot, call the inn and they will take you to the entrance of the hot spring resort.

About the Room

All rooms in the Showakan have a washroom and toilet, but there is no bath, so you will have to use the public bath.

The rooms are mainly Japanese-style rooms, so you will sleep on a futon in a Tatami room.

Western-style rooms are also available, but they have a bed for one person.

The types of rooms at Showakan are as follows.

We recommend river side rooms with a view of the Ginzan Onsen district.

All rooms do not have a bath, so bathing is available in the large hot spring bathhouse.

Amenities include hand towel, bath towel, hair dryer, toothbrush, toothpaste, hand soap, brush, yukata, shaving lotion (men), cleansing oil, facial cleansing foam, cotton, and hair elastic (women).

About the Baths

The Showakan has separate indoor and outdoor baths for men and women.

There is also an indoor open-air bath on the 6th floor, with men and women changing according to the time of day.

The large bath is not very spacious, as it is not a large ryokan, but the open-air bath in the sky is liberating.

The indoor bath is on the mountain side, so there is no view from the window, but the water is free-flowing from the source.

There are no private baths.

About the food of the meal

Meals are served at the restaurant. The Fukayama restaurant on the 4th floor has a nice plaster decoration with a good old Showa-era atmosphere.

Dinner is prepared with local ingredients and seasonal produce.

The menu includes homemade sake, grilled Yamagata beef, Yamagata's famous taro soup, sashimi of rockfish, and rice cooked with local Tsuyahime rice.(PR)

The cuisine changes depending on the season, but it has a reputation for being delicious.

Breakfast is Japanese style and includes local specialties such as rice cooked with benibana (a local delicacy), soaked vegetables, eggs, fuki, cod roe, grilled fish, mushrooms, miso soup, pickles, and nori (seaweed).

Benibana rice is cooked in a pot for one person, and it is delicious.

The menu changes depending on the time of year and other factors.

As the name “Aji to Magokoro no Yado Showakan” (Inn of Aji and Magokoro) implies, the food is very tasty and the hospitality is very good.

word-of-mouth evaluation

The hotel was lovely.
The food was very good for breakfast and dinner.
I enjoyed walking around the spa town.
The pink tanzen were also very cute.
We didn't share the bath with anyone.
I have seen some harsh comments about the bath being too hot, too lukewarm, etc., but I think it is part of traveling in the countryside and in remote hot spring resorts to enjoy the inconvenience.

The room for four was already full, so we took a Japanese-style room and a single room.
The Japanese-style room was on the river side and the ryokan itself is located right in the middle of Ginzan Onsen, so we had good views from both sides and enjoyed the night view of the onsen town to the fullest.
I also enjoyed the Hanagasa Ondo dance performance at night.
The meals were not luxurious, but each dish was thoughtful and tasty, and all were very good.
I ate a complete dinner and breakfast.
The indoor and outdoor baths are of excellent quality, although you need to be careful in the sky bath because it is hot.
There were many handmade folk crafts in the hotel, which were probably made by the proprietress.
They were all cute and soothing, and had a rich Showa-era retro atmosphere.
Although the inn is small, there is no excessive service, so we were able to spend a relaxing time.
The hot spring, night view, and food were enough to satisfy me.
